As A Client, What Should I Bring To My Photo Session?

There’s a few things some people don’t think about when they schedule a photo-session with a photographer. Of course, you need to bring yourself and all the people being photographed with all the planned makeup / outfits already on. Sometimes it’s good to plan ahead and bring a few extra items, though.

So, if you’re interested in knowing what I recommend all photo clients bring to their shoots; keep reading!

↓ Here Are 5 Things to Bring On Every Photoshoot ↓

  • Bring Outdoor Supplies Like Bug Spray, Sunscreen, and Hand Sanitizer / Wipes.

Most photoshoots are done outdoors and the outdoors can be wildly unpredictable! You never know what you may encounter while you’re out taking photos. There have been times where both my client and I have been eaten alive while on a photoshoot. DON’T RISK IT! It’s seriously worth it to always have some bug repellent on hand!

Same goes for sunscreen. I always try to put some on before a shoot, but even when I’ve coated my body in the good stuff right before leaving for the session I’ve come back home with some good sunburns. Sunscreen doesn’t last all day, I recommend bringing some on shoots just in case you need to reapply mid-shoot!

When it comes down to hand sanitizer and wipes, we all know the pandemic is going around, so it’s always good to have with you anyway. It’s also just a great thing to have with you in general, though. Nature can be dirty. If you accidentally touch a sappy bit of tree trunk while on a shoot, you’ll be grateful to have something to get it off of yourself with! Truustt Meee!

  • Pack A Change Of Clothes And Extra Makeup. Just In Case!

In the same spirit as the previous items, prepare for the unexpected! If you accidentally spill something on your outfit or have some other form of wardrobe malfunction, it’s great to have a spare option in your car. Plus, even if you don’t discuss a 2nd outfit for your shoot with your photographer; maybe if there’s a little extra time you can change super quick to sneak some variety in. Though, I would always mention the possibility of a 2nd outfit to your photographer before the shoot out of courtesy.

Makeup is also unpredictable. What if you’re sipping on a beverage on the way to a shoot and mess up some lipstick you had planned on wearing? Or If you accidentally rub your eyes and smear all your eye makeup? You never know!! If you’re planning on wearing makeup to a photoshoot, I highly recommend bringing the necessary products to touch it up right before your photos are taken. It’s better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it!

  • Wear Proper Footwear Or Bring Along A Change Of Shoes!

It’s good to wear the proper footwear for the location of your photoshoot! I understand if you want to wear those ultra cute high heel boots with that matching skirt or those laid back sandals that vibe with your whole outfit, but some of those shoe options do not mix with the type of terrain you may need to navigate for your shoot! Especially if there’s a little bit of hiking or a lot of walking involved!

For these instances wear a pair of comfy and appropriate shoes to do the exploring/walking around in and you can bring the shoes you actually want to be photographed in along with you. Just change out shoes when you get to the spot you and your photographer decide to do the shoot at. Your feet with thank you!

  • Bring Snacks And Something To Drink! You Never Know!

Even If you eat right before you leave your house, BRING SNACKS! Maybe you have a long-ish drive to get to your photoshoot location, maybe what you ate before you left wasn’t as filling as you thought it would be, or maybe you end up starving at the end of your photo session from working it in front of the camera for so long. Who knows? It’s so important to have energy and to keep the whole session positive from the time you leave your house to the time you walk back through your front door! Don’t let hunger ruin your experience!

Staying hydrated is also essential to keeping a positive experience, and everything that can be said for food can also be said for water or any other form of beverage. Make sure you pack up both in your car before you head off to your photoshoot!

  • Come With Any And All Questions Already Asked And Answered!

This is a really important one. Feeling confident about your photoshoot before it happens is a major vibe boost to the experience. You also only have a set amount of time to shoot with your photographer, don’t waste too much of it on asking questions!

Before your shoot try to think of any questions you might have and get them answered before the day of your photo session. It not only saves time but like I said, you’ll feel so much more confident about your photos while walking into the shoot!

  • Come Pumped With A Good Mindset! It’s All About Having A Good Time!

Have a good breakfast and get a good night’s sleep the night before! Listen to some music that makes you feel good or listen to your favorite songs on the way to your photo location. Remember to stay positive and just have a good time! The better you feel on the day of your photoshoot, the more you’re sure to absolutely love the photos you get back!
